February 12th, 2017
Hello MMS Parents and Families,

I hope this email finds you well!  I just wanted to share some school updates with you.
We have so many good things happening at MMS.  Spring sports are starting soon.  This is baseball, softball, soccer and track.   Schedules are posted on our school website.  Congratulations to many of our wrestlers for placing in the state championship this past weekend!
We are really excited to be rolling out laptops for EVERY student and creating a 1:1 environment.  These devices will stay at school and we are looking forward to the changes they are bringing to teaching and learning.  These were purchased though a grant from the NC Golden Leaf Foundation.  We had an anonymous donor purchase cases for each student.  Buckner Oil has also donated money to purchase each student a stylus since the devices are touch screen.  We are very appreciative of this community support!  Just FYI….we will have a “Tech Deck” store where we will sell items such as ear buds, screen wipes, etc….  There is more information on our school website.
We had a wonderful and fun 8th grade semi-formal last Friday night at the Cooperative Extension office.  We did group dances, slow dances, dance offs, even the limbo.  I think everyone had a great time!  I appreciate the parents and families that donated money, food, drinks and the other snacks!
Just a reminder that you can give a staff member a “Shout Out” using a quick online form.  This is a quick and easy way to recognize or thank a staff member.  The link to this online form is:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeInAG9zXehlWZKI_7Bfiq7-TrP3VHy56EczVosJVop2qt4QA/viewform
We have a field trip scheduled for the 75 students who maintained perfect attendance during 1st semester.  We will be going to the Mars Hill Theater on Friday, February 24th.  Great job to these 75 students.  Attendance is a critical issue and I want to remind you that students are allowed to miss only 8 days per semester.  Anything over 8 days in the 2nd semester will have to be made up in summer school, we will not be offering after school attendance make up.
The MMS Beta Club is selling Orange Crush or Grape Crush during lunch on Monday, February 13th,  for $1.  Students can purchase at lunch and it will be delivered on Valentine’s Day
Our 8th grade Advanced Dance/Drama class has been performing “Teenage Nightmare” for the elementary schools, our school and parents.  They have had some great performances and I’m proud of their creativity and ability.
Join us on Sunday, March 5th, at Texas Roadhouse on Hendersonville Road.  It is an MMS Spirit Day and they are donating 10% of total food purchases.  You must tell them you are there supporting Madison Middle School.
Congratulations to the following students who received recognition for their performance at the Judging in January Livestock Judging Contest in Raleigh:
Chase Cutshall was 3rd high individual in Jr. Division Swine. Haydn Hensley was on the High School team which placed 1st in Senior Swine Division. Haydn was the 8th high individual in the contest in Swine.
We have been excited to sponsor a Ski/Snowboard Club on Tuesdays at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort.  Parents and family members can get the great discount on Tuesdays when the club is there.  Let me know if you would like to join us.
Our next PBIS trip is bowling and the trips will be on April 3rd and 4th.

Important Dates for 8th grade families.
Hard to believe it's time to begin transition plans.

February 16th - 8th graders will meet with staff and students from Madison Early College High School during advisory time. Applications will be available for students to pick up. Applications are also available on the website for Madison Early College High School.

March 2nd - 8th graders will meet with staff and students from Madison High School during advisory time

March 7th - High School Parent Night at MMS...Opportunity for parents to come from 5 to 7 and see options for high school, both Madison Early College and Madison High School. Booths set up from 5 to 6 and then presentations by each school from 6 to 7.

April 1st - Early College applications due

April 7th - Students will visit Madison High School and Madison Early College and will eat lunch at Madison High School.

Thanks for taking time to read this information.  You can always check our school website and Facebook page for updates, pictures and other important school information.  You can always email me, nhoneycutt@madisonk12.net, call me or stop by for a visit.
Thanks,
Nicholas

November 19, 2016
Good morning MMS parents and families!

As always, I hope this email finds you well.  I am proud to share with you about some of the great things happening at Madison Middle School.  Thank you for the very important role you play in that.  As I post in my weekly updates on FaceBook, I feel very privileged to serve as the principal at your child’s school.
We are excited to welcome Tara Edwards to our middle school family.  Mrs. Edwards is a Madison County native and comes to us from Buncombe County, she will be teaching 7th and 8th grade English/Language Arts.
Winter sports have started.  Our basketball and wrestling teams are excited about the upcoming season.  Our cheerleaders and pep band are adding so much school spirit and excitement to our athletic events.  Several students have talked to me about starting a student pep club for our home athletic events.  Get the dates of all our school events from the online calendar on our website.
Thank you for your help with the outstanding balances in the cafeteria.  We went from a negative balance of almost $2000 to less than $500.  We will keep working on it but thanks for your help!
We will be having a school improvement team meeting on November 28th at 3:20, please let me know if you would be interested in attending.
Thanks to our Gear Up partnership with UNCA, we will be sponsoring 5 “Lunch and Learn” series throughout the year.  UNCA will be providing lunch and a guest speaker at each event and up to 20 students can sign up for each one.  The first one is November 30th, and it’s called “The College Experience.”  Another lunch and learn series will be gaming and coding, the students are really excited about this one.
Christmas Bazaar and Sale....Santa will be visiting for the children.  Saturday, December 3rd, 8 AM to 1 PM.  This will be a crafts fair and yard sale. Rent a booth space in the gym for $10. This event is sponsored by the Patriot Action Council.  We hope to see you there!
A special thanks to our Beta Club.  They have been collecting, sorting and packing items for care packages for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.  They delivered those items on Friday.
We are excited to partner with two of our elementary schools, Brush Creek Elementary and Hot Springs Elementary, to sponsor “Reading Buddies” with our students.  The middle school students really enjoy partnering up with the younger kids for reading and writing.
Our technology team is working hard to prepare for a smooth rollout of almost 600 laptops to our students after Christmas break.  Teachers received devices in early November and are really excited about the teaching and learning options this provides.  Remember, our goal is not more screen time for students, but these devices are an instructional tool that will provide students with an improved learning experience.  It’s going to be great!  Each parent and student will need to sign a user agreement before student use.  The devices will stay at school.  We will have an accidental fee of $25 in the case of accidental damage.  The devices are insured and each student will be given a device free of charge.  The only charge would be the accidental damage fee of $25 if something happened to the device.  A shout out to our Instructional Technology Facilitator, Andrew Beasley, for his leadership with this project.
Our bike club visited the Virginia Creeper Trail on Veteran’s Day.  It was a great day and the students really enjoyed themselves.
Some of our 8th grade health classes will be attending a “teen town hall forum” on November 29th on the effects of underage drinking.  This is being sponsored by the Madison Substance Abuse Coalition, RHA and Madison Early College High School.
Our 2nd nine weeks PBIS field trip will be snow tubing at Wolf Laurel.  That will be scheduled at the end of the nine weeks and it definitely depends on the required “snow” to do it.
We will also be sponsoring a field trip for students who have had perfect attendance the first semester.  We will be going to the Trampoline Park in Asheville.
Remember, next week is a short week, school is closed November 23 – 25 for Thanksgiving break.  The last day for students before Christmas break is December 16th.  That is a half day, release at 11:30.
As you can see, we have a lot of great things happening at MMS.  The staff work really hard and we have a great group of students!  As always, check our website or social media (Facebook, Instagram or Twitter) for updates about activities at MMS.  My door is always open and I’m just a call away.
Thanks,
Nicholas

Hello Madison Middle parents and families,

If I have not had the chance to meet you, I am Nicholas Honeycutt, and I have the privilege of working as the new Principal at Madison Middle School.  I have worked here before as a teacher, athletic director and assistant principal.  I’m excited to be back!
Occasionally, i will send out emails to parents/families about school activities and school and student accomplishments and recognitions.  If you want your email removed, please reply saying so.  Addresses were taken from the forms sent home at the beginning of the year.
My first two weeks have been great, I have enjoyed getting back in the middle school groove with many familiar faces and several new faces in the staff.  The kids are great, I have really enjoyed being in the classrooms, hallways, gym and cafeteria getting to know your students.
Thanks for a great turnout for open house/report card pickup this week.  It makes a huge difference when school and home communicate and share.
We are in the process of beginning a student council at the school.  Students are currently able to fill out applications and we will be campaigning, making speeches and voting in the near future.
We are excited to have over 400 students being recognized for positive behavior on Friday.  We will be giving those students an option of watching Hotel Transylvania or social time outside with friends.  We will also be serving free popcorn during the reward time.
We are considering several clubs that we would like to get started at the school.  I think it is important for middle school students to belong to a group, team, club, etc….
Next week, we will be recognizing students who have made the A and AB Honor Roll for the first grading period.  To make the honor roll, students must have an A or B average in all core classes and elective courses are averaged to measure for an A or B.  Our plan is to recognize students on the honor roll with a free Bojangles biscuit or Krispy Kreme doughnut, one morning before school.  We will also be giving certificates and coupons for the honor roll.
We are on FaceBook and Twitter.  Like our page and then you can see our updates in your newsfeed.  Our page is at
https://www.facebook.com/Madison-Middle-School-172327932970711
We are working hard to keep our school website updated.  Check it often, important links and information are available there.  http://mms.madisonk12.schoolfusion.us/?sessionid=2c051d1718c7ccea9bff146e1c745c8c&t
November 2nd and 3rd - basketball tryouts at MMS and BCES gyms
November 2nd - wrestling practice begins at the Wellness Center after school
November 11th - school closed for Veteran’s Day Holiday
As always, thanks for your time, support and involvement with your middle schooler!  It is a great age, very trying age, very fun age!  I am always a call, text, email or visit away.  I’m always open to suggestions and hearing new ideas.
Take care,
Nicholas

December 6, 2015
Good evening MMS families and parents,

I hope this email finds you doing well as we get into the Christmas and holiday season!  I’m certainly enjoying my introduction, maybe re-introduction, to Madison Middle School.  I’m enjoying meeting your students, working with the staff, driving the bus and working to make Madison Middle the best school it can be!
Our band students did a great job at their concert last Friday night!  Thanks to band director, Drew Brooks, and all the students for their hard work.  They were in the Hot Springs parade on Saturday and will be in Marshall’s parade next Saturday.
Our winter sports teams are off to good starts!  Thanks to basketball coaches Jason Ponder and Rebekah Huff and wrestling coach John Clark for their work with our athletes each day after school and sometimes even on the weekends.
Thank you to everyone who supported the "Patriot Action Council" yard sale and Christmas craft fair on Saturday. We raised around $500.00!! Thanks to the staff who gave up their Saturday to help, the students (especially Santa and his elves) who showed up early on a Saturday morning at school to help, the parent volunteers, the parents and community who gave donations, the vendors who made it all possible, and the community for the support of showing up! This was our first annual of these, meaning we will be doing it again!
Next time you are in the building, check out the lobby near the gym.  We have installed a large screen to the wall and will be using that to display school announcements, pictures and recognize outstanding work in the classrooms with our students and staff.
We will be starting a Beta Club for all grade levels in January 2016.  We have developed a committee to establish the standards and processes for induction into the Beta Club.  We are excited about this program at Madison Middle.
We are also looking into offering foreign language courses for 8th graders in the second semester.  Our best option may include an online class.  Not sure if this will work out but I wanted to let you know we are in the early stages of discussion for this.  When meeting with 8th graders last week, the students seemed excited about us considering this.
We have MMS tee-shirts that will be for sale this week at Madison Middle. Available in small, medium and large. Great price - $5.00.  There is a picture of the front and back attached.
I am encouraging our students and staff to help us raise our state report card school grade from a C to a B! Madison Middle isn't a C school. Can we do it, YES WE CAN! Teamwork, dedication, grit, focus and encouraging others will make this happen! Please speak with your child and encourage him/her to do their very best every day! It will pay off for them and for our school!
We have extended each lunch period by 10 minutes in order to give students the opportunity to socialize, move around and see friends that they may not have classes with. This will begin on Monday. Students that have minor discipline issues on that day may serve this 10 extra minutes in detention.
Madison Middle School has a new cell phone policy. This policy was discussed and explained with all students on Friday in meetings with Mr. Honeycutt and Mrs. Chandler. Our goal is to give students a bit more independence and freedom, asking them to be a bit more responsible. For those with phones, students may now carry their phone with them in their pockets or backpack. They can also use them during the 5 minute class changing breaks. They may only use them in the classroom with TEACHER permission. They may also NOT use them during lunch or the new recess time. If a phone is taken or caught when it is not to be used or have it out:
1st time - student gets it back at the end of the day from the teacher
2nd time - student gets it back from the office at the end of the day
3rd time - parents must make an appointment to pick it up
4th time - phone is kept for the remainder of the year in the office
Our next PBIS Reward Trip is scheduled for December 17th and 18th (it was originally scheduled for Dec 10th and 11th.) The trip will be to Fun Depot. Cost for the trip is $22. This purchases a 3 hour play card, 3 special activities and lunch. Permission slips were sent home Friday, December 4th and need to be returned by Friday, December 11th. To be eligible for the trip, students must not have an Office Discipline Referral, have 2 or less MIR's, be making a 75 or above in core classes and have 8 or less absences.

Good afternoon MMS parents and families,
I hope this email finds you well!
Just a reminder that school is closed this Wednesday in honor of Veteran’s Day!
We had a very uplifting Veteran’s Day ceremony this morning.  Many local veterans attended our program and spoke to the students.  Thanks to Mrs. Wanda Robinson for organizing the program.
We will be recognizing students on the A and AB Honor Roll this Thursday with a Krispy Kreme doughnut and a coupon for Subway or Pizza Hut.  We are proud of these students and their hard work!
We have student council campaigns going on this week.  The halls are getting decorated with candidate’s posters.  These are exciting times!  Elections will be held on Monday, November 16th.
We have begun an advisory period, every Thursday, between 2nd and 3rd blocks.  This is a time for students to get in small groups with an adult staff member to help them look at academic progress, make goals and discuss middle school life issues.  We will be doing advisory two weeks of each month, every other Thursday we will be doing other activities like remediation, study hall, silent sustained reading or student clubs.
We are looking to have school pride apparel available in the near future.  We currently have a website with several items.  More coming later.  The website is www.bsnsports.com/mts and the Access Code is: patrio5KM
The deadline for order on this website is November 12th.
6th, 7th and 8th AIG students were invited to attend a field trip to UNCA to see a play on Sunday, November 22nd. Permission slips have been sent home and should be returned as soon as possible.
Congratulations to art teacher, Kirsten Davis, who received a Bright Ideas Grant from French Broad EMC.  She will use the funds for special art projects.
As you child may have told you, we are selling used iPod touches for $25, on a first come, first serve basis.  We have more interest than iPods, I think.  If we have more buyers than we do iPods, we will have a drawing.  That drawing will be held tomorrow.  Permission slips have been available for students to bring home if interested in purchasing one.
Madison Middle would like to raise funds to help students and teachers have more supplies, field trips, guest artists and student awards.
We are collecting items for seven different baskets to be raffled off in December. We will collect items from November 6th to November 18th. Any help you can give with this endeavor will be greatly appreciated. A list of baskets and examples of items to go in the baskets are listed below. Help us gather any items for any of the baskets and we are going to build the baskets once everything is in.

Mark Your Calendars - Saturday, December 5th, Patriots Christmas Yard Sale - at the school, opens at 8 AM. You can donate items for the school to sell or you can rent a booth for $10 and sell your own items. Spread the word.
Email jgreene@madisonk12.net to reserve your spot.
We are always looking for banner sponsors for our athletic program.  If you have a business or know a business that might be interested in sponsoring a banner and having the business name hang in the gym, please contact myself or Athletic Director, Jason Ponder, at jponder@madisonk12.net.
As always, I invite you to visit our school website and school FaceBook, these are great tools for updates and seeing pictures of school happenings.
Our winter sports get under way soon, basketball and wrestling practice has started.  The athletic schedules are on the school website.  The first game and match is against North Buncombe.  Wrestling is at home, basketball is away.
My biggest expectation for our school is fairly simple, RESPECT.  I speak often to students about respecting each other, respecting staff and respecting the building.  With respect, we can do anything, and will do anything!
Thanks for your support and dedication to our middle school students!  My door is always open and I’m always just an email away.  Please let me know if I can help.
Thanks,
Nicholas
